Mud ball formula + interesting tech

Happy Thursday!

Found the research and data you need to know if you have a mud ball next time you play (bottom of this email)!

Make sure to write that down or screenshot for the next time you play.

πŸŽ₯ This off-season I plan on kicking of a new Youtube series called Range Rats.

Watching great players practice and train to see what habits and tactics we can learn from.

Answering the question... what the heck do players do between tournaments anyways on off weeks?!

We mocked up a logo for the series this week. What do you think?

πŸŽ™οΈ Interesting Tech I've been using:

  1. The new Hackmotion wrist sensor and app are incredible. Hit 10 shots and it'll give you suggestions on some training to do. Do the drills and the app gives you feedback as you go. Here's a quick video I made on it.

  2. New company from Europe called Bal.On has a set of shoe insoles that show you pressure traces. Fascinated by how small this tech has gotten and the ability to now take what used to just be in a teaching studio out onto the golf course.

  3. I started playing a little VR golf last winter and excited to start playing again. The Meta Quest and Golf+ app are really really really amazing. Pair that up with a DeadEyeVR club and you feel like you're swinging a club and playing golf. You can hit fades, draws, and it all feels very real.

⛳️ MUD BALL! The simple formula to remember.

Found this great research from Dr Paul Wood over at Ping which gives us the answer on how approach a shot with mud on the ball.

How Mud Affects Ball Flight:

  • Aerodynamics: When the ball flies, air flows around it, creating lift and drag (forces that affect the ball’s speed and direction). Mud on one side of the ball affects how the air flows, causing the ball to curve in the opposite direction of the mud.

To test this, they used a robot to hit balls with mud on different partsβ€”right, left, top, bottom, front, and back. They found that:

  • Mud on the right made the ball curve left (about 25 yards).
  • Mud on the left made the ball curve right (about 30 yards).
  • Mud all over caused inconsistent flights.

Mud on the ball also caused the ball to travel shorter distances.

When the mud was on the back or bottom of the ball, the ball traveled even shorter because the club hit the mud before hitting the ball, reducing energy transfer.

2 Things to Remember:

  1. If you see mud on one side of the ball, aim in the opposite direction to compensate for the curve.

  2. Mud on the ball will likely reduce carry distance so plan accordingly.

Which one of these shots will help you the most?

It finally happened. For the first time in my life I have a recorded shot over 180mph ball speed. This past week I hit 181! πŸŽ‰ ➑️ Watch it happen here What a journey it's been this year! I asked Mark Crossfield and Nick Clearwater for some advice on my road to 180 recently! Mark has gone on his own journey to more speed so I was curious what he would think about what I was working on. It was a really useful convo with a GREAT drill I've been doing ever since.
